Requirements for explainable AI in the maritime industry
Insights from stakeholders from the (inland) shipping industry
Introduction
This innovation project explores how cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digitalisation can support strategic developments within the port. Conducted by AI Port Center in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University, the project provides insights into these technologies’ transformative potential for the port’s future growth. The initiative identifies opportunities that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness in key operational areas, aligning with the port authority’s corporate strategy.
Insights from Stakeholders
Perceptions of the Smart Company: Stakeholders recognize substantial benefits in improved efficiency, reliability, and sustainability from adopting smart technologies.
Pain Points Addressed by AI: Common pain points include resource inefficiencies, operational delays, and safety risks, all of which AI technologies can effectively mitigate.
Current Digital Maturity: Stakeholders indicate varying levels of digital maturity, highlighting the need for targeted strategies to raise overall technological competencies.
Barriers and Compliance
Barriers to AI Integration: Major barriers include resistance to change, lack of clear understanding of AI capabilities, and infrastructure limitations.
